Traditional Bengali Crab Curry Recipe
Ever tried crab curry? Don't be surprised. Crabs are an absolute favourite among seafood lovers. There goes a saying that if you want to prepare a tasty Indian seafood recipe then you should learn it from a Bengali. So, here is the traditional Bengali crab curry recipe for you.
Bengali crab curry is originally known as 'kankrar jhaal'. You do not need a lot of ingredients to prepare this crab curry. But the taste is just delicious and irresistible. This recipe is cooked with a balanced mix of spices which gives it a completely unique flavour.

Preparation time: 1 hour
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- Fresh crabs- 2 (broken, with the body and legs separated)
- Bay leaves- 2
- Cinnamon stick- 1
- Cloves- 5
- Cardamom- 4
- Cumin seeds- 1tsp
- Onion paste- 2tbsp
- Ginger-garlic paste- 1tbsp
- Tomato- 1 (finely chopped)
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Green chillies- 2 (slit)
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 1tbsp
- Water- 1 cup
Procedure
- Clean and wash the crabs thoroughly under running water.
- Heat water in a pan and steam the crabs in it for about 8-10 minutes.
- Remove the crabs and keep the water in store for later use.
- Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves and fry for about a minute.
- Add onion paste and fry for about 4-5 minutes on medium heat.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for 2 minutes.
- Now add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt, green chillies and saute for 3-4 minutes.
- Add the steamed crabs and mix well. Cover and cook for about 7-8 minutes on low flame.
- Add the water in which the crabs had been steamed to the curry. Mix well.
- Cover and cook for another 2 minutes and then switch off the flame.
Delicious and traditional Bengali crab curry is ready to be served. Enjoy this awesome seafood recipe with steamed rice.
