Hyderabadi Achari Murgh: Step-By-Step Recipe
Hyderabadi recipes have a different charm of their own. They are laced with the flavour of the fragrant Indian masalas, which make the Hyderabadi recipes a delight for the foodies. Achari murgh, a chicken recipe from Hyderabad, is the best example of the medley of Indian masalas.
Hyderabadi achari murgh is a flavourful chicken recipe. The use of spices such as cumin, fenugreek, mustard and onion seeds add a completely unique flavour to this dish. You can have this spicy and delicious dish for your parties or if you are expecting some special guests.

While most people believe that achari chicken means using pickle in the chicken, it is actually not so. This recipe is called achari chicken or achari murgh because the spices used in the recipe are the same that we usually use in our Indian pickles.

All you need
- Chicken- 500 gms (cut into medium pieces)
- Onions- 3 (sliced)
- Ginger- garlic paste- 2tbsp
- Tomatoes- 2 (finely chopped)
- Yogurt- 1/2 cup
- Lemon juice- 2tbsp
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Red chilli powder- 1tsp
- Kalonji (onion seeds)- 1tsp
- Methi (fenugreek) seeds- 1tsp
- Jeera (cumin seeds)- 1tsp
- Saunf (fennel) seeds- 1/2 tsp
- Bay leaf- 2
- Dry red chillies- 3
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil/ghee- 2tbsp
For Achari Masala
- Kalonji (onion seeds)- 1tsp
- Mustard seeds- 1tsp
- Methi (fenugreek) seeds- 1tsp
- Jeera (cumin seeds)- 1tsp
- Saunf (fennel) seeds- 2tsp
- Bay leaf- 2
- Dry red chillies- 3
Procedure
Step 1- Roast and grind all the ingredients mentioned under achari masala into a fine powder in a mixer. Keep it aside. Wash the chicken pieces and marinate it with lemon juice and salt for about 15-20 minutes.

Step 2- Heat oil/ghee in a pan and add the ginger garlic paste. Fry for a minute. Then, add the chicken pieces and saute for about 5-6 minutes.

Step 3- Now, add the kalonji seeds, saunf seeds, jeera seeds, dry red chillies, methi seeds and bay leaf to it. Mix well and saute for 3-4 minutes.

Step 4- Then, add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and sliced onions to it. Cook till the onions become soft.

Step 5- Now, add the tomatoes and the achari masala powder. Mix well and cook for 3-4 minutes.

Step 6- Finally, add the yogurt and mix well. Cover and cook on low flame for about 20-25 minutes.

Step 7- Once the chicken gets completely cooked, switch off the flame and garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.

Hyderabadi achari murgh is ready to be served. Enjoy this special chicken delight with rice or rotis.

Nutrition Value
This traditional Hyderabadi achari chicken recipe has fewer calories when cooked in oil. However, if you want to make it tasty with ghee, then this chicken recipe has a higher calorie count. It is not a very rich recipe and is cooked mainly in yogurt. So, dieters can opt for this delectable dish and cook it in low fat yogurt.

Tips
You can marinate the chicken with the achari masala for a few hours before you start preparing the recipe. Make slits in the chicken before marinating it. It will make the chicken taste even better.
