Onam 2023: 10 Ways To Celebrate This Auspicious Festival
Onam is one of the most significant festivals that is celebrated in Kerala. It is basically a harvest festival that goes on for ten days. It falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September).
The festival commemorates the homecoming of King Mahabali, a mythical ruler who was believed to have ruled over Kerala in ancient times. This year the festival is celebrated from Sun, 20 August 2023 to Thursday, 31 August 2023. Let us know how you can celebrate this becautiful festival for 10 days.

1. Pookalam- A Floral Rangoli
One of the highlights of Onam is the creation of Pookalams, which are intricate floral rangolis made using various flowers and petals. Each day, new layers are added to these beautiful designs outside homes and temples as a way to welcome King Mahabali.
2. Vallamkali - Snake Boat Race
Vallamkali or snake boat race is an exhilarating event held during Onam. Teams row traditional longboats called 'Chundan Vallams' in synchronized harmony while spectators cheer them on from the banks of rivers. This thrilling sport showcases Kerala's rich cultural heritage.
3. Sadya - Feast for Food Lovers
The Sadya feast is an integral part of Onam celebrations. It consists of a vegetarian banquet served on banana leaves with numerous dishes like avial, olan, thoran, and payasam. The meal is traditionally eaten while sitting on the floor, and it showcases the culinary diversity of Kerala.
4. Pulikali - Tiger Dance
Pulikali, also known as Tiger Dance, is a vibrant folk art form performed during Onam. Men paint themselves as tigers with intricate designs and dance through the streets to entertain the crowd. The rhythmic beats of traditional instruments add to the festive atmosphere.
5. Onathappan - Floral Arrangement
Onathappan is a unique floral arrangement made during Onam. It involves creating a small pyramid-like structure using clay or brass, which represents King Mahabali. This arrangement is then adorned with flowers and placed in homes as a symbol of prosperity and good luck.
6. Traditional Attire: Kasavu Saree & Mundu
During Onam, people in Kerala adorn themselves in traditional attire like Kasavu sarees for women and Mundus for men. The Kasavu sarees are off-white with golden borders, while Mundus are white cotton garments worn around the waist. These outfits add elegance to the festivities.
7. Participating In Talent Shows: Pulikali & Kaikottikkali
Onam is a time for showcasing talents through various cultural performances. Pulikali, the tiger dance, and Kaikottikkali, a graceful group dance performed by women, are two popular forms of entertainment during this festival. These shows bring communities together in celebration.
